Frequently Asked Questions:

Answer to question 0
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is how we pay attention, on purpose, to each particular moment.  Very often, we are busy with the usual life demands - work, family, school etc, that we miss so much of what is happening to/around us.  Mindfulness helps us pay attention to those moments and as a result helps us become more aware of our own unique responses.  It is these unique responses that sometimes create stress.  Practicing mindfulness is a way to manage our stress
I hear the word mindfulness all the time, how is this different?
Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a program that began 40 years ago when UMASS Medical School microbiologist Jon Kabat-Zinn heard from his medical colleagues that many/most patients with chronic health issues don’t report feeling better, even after medical intervention.  Jon’s knowledge of the impermanent nature of cellular activity coupled with his longstanding yoga practice launched what is now known world wide as MBSR, the “gold standard” of mindfulness training.  This eight week evidenced-based program follows a scientifically researched approach to learning/practicing four types of awareness meditations, along with home practices and mindfulness activities.  MBSR is not a “technique” rather a way of being that when incorporated into your daily life can help create balance and reduce stress.
What if I have to miss a class?
First of all, we will miss you.  If you do have to miss a class, please be in contact with me so we can go over the week’s  home practices/activities.  If you know that you will have to miss more than two classes, it is best to wait until another class session.  Given the experiential nature of MBSR and group interactions, class time is important.

Do you cancel for bad weather?
Class will be cancelled in the event of severe weather.  If class is held, you know your commute, car etc. use your good judgment, we will want you to be safe.  If a class is cancelled, the program will be extended by a week so please plan accordingly.  I will be in contact with you via email in the event of a weather related cancellation.

What if I have never been to a class like this before?
Welcome!  With the exception of simply being human, there is no previous experience or knowledge required for this class.  Even if you have previous experience with mindfulness or mindfulness meditation you are encouraged to approach the eight weeks with what’s called a “beginner’s mind”.  So often our assumptions and perceptions get in the way of how we view ourselves/situations.  You will be encouraged to let those go and start fresh.
I am a professional, can I use what I learn for my work?
The daily practice of mindfulness will impact all your life roles.  You will take whatever you learn about yourself into every aspect of your life.  If you are a professional “helper” (therapist, doctor, personal care attendant, teacher etc) can you drop below that role and come to class for yourself?
What if I don’t have time to practice?
Ah, yes…time.  If you participate in MBSR you are making a commitment to you- mind and body.   As a result, you will figure out a way to support yourself during this class.
Do I have to bring/wear anything special?
Nothing special is required.  You may want to dress in comfortable clothes with extra layers if you are sensitive to temperature changes.  Shoes are not worn in class space so comfy socks or slippers may feel nice.  Water is allowed in the class space.  There are no formal breaks so if a snack is needed bring something you can have if you need to step out of class.  Of course if you have specific medical needs, please make sure those are available to you during class.
What is the cost of the program?
The full program cost is $300.   Some scholarships are available.
